This lovely example was originally finished in Silver Metallic with a Powder Blue interior and equipped with a 2 1/2-litre engine, per its accompanying JDHT certificate. It was originally sold to an Eli Toft in Wolverhampton, England, and by 1951 it was advertised for sale for £295, painted red and fitted with a 3 1/2-litre engine. By the mid 1960s the Jaguar was purchased by specialist Eric Hook, who imported the car into California and restored it. A 1967 document on file notes the car’s engine as S1187, the same as remains fitted today and originally from a Jaguar Mk IV Drophead Coupe. This may also have been the engine in the car when advertised in 1951.

Don Marsh - a lifelong enthusiast who also owned a Jaguar XKSS - acquired the Jaguar in 1998 and a document on file notes that the car was restored in 1996. In Mr. Marsh’s care, the Jaguar received cosmetic attention and mechanical enhancements, including an engine and gearbox rebuild and the fitment of an aluminum radiator and fuel cell. An Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance participant in 2002, this SS100 offers a rare opportunity to acquire a charming example of Jaguar’s first true sports car.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
