Car offered at:
www.gullwingmotorcars.com/1934-jaguar-ss1-c-4918.htm
Seller's description:
This 1934 Jaguar SS1 Tourer is a rare and exciting matching numbers car just out of a large collection. $40,000 documented engine rebuild and recently driven 750+ miles reliably. Offered with a Heritage Certificate and a thick folder of receipts and correspondence. New tires, hood sides, weather gear, and the original head all included. A very original car with correct hardware and gauges etc. It's a fast example, almost a "hot rod", which is happy at 55-60 mph on the flats. The restoration was likely done in the late 50's or early 60's. A very correct older restoration, nearly appearing original in regards to paina. A CCCA full classic. Very thick folder of receipts and correspondence. Forerunner of the marque Jaguar from SS Cars Ltd of Coventry, the SS1 predated yet epitomised the later advertising slogan, Grace, Space, Pace. SS originally stood for the Swallow Sidecar & Coachbuilding Company, which had been founded in Blackpool, England by William Walmsley in 1922. The company branched out into motor manufacture in 1926. The SS1 was launched in October 1931 with a low under-slung chassis designed by Willliam Lyons. Lyons design for the body was startling: the SS1s excessively long bonnet, tiny passenger compartment and helmet-type front wings suggesting that it represented the ultimate in high performance. In so doing, the SS1 went some way towards establishing the pattern for future Jaguars, combining sporting good looks with a better-than-average specification and all at a bargain price.

This 1934 SS1 is a four-seat tourer that was completed on April 23, 1934, and distributed new via Henlys of London, England, before being imported to the US in the late 1930s. A 2019 overhaul of the L-head inline-six included a displacement increase to 2.3 liters with the installation of a Jaguar Mk V crankshaft, a 20hp cylinder head, a dual-row timing chain, and a high-volume oil pump. Finished in cream over green, the car also features a four-speed manual transmission, mechanically actuated four-wheel drum brakes, friction shock absorbers, green-painted 18” wire wheels, and a black convertible top with matching side curtains. Purchased by the selling dealer in 2024, this SS1 tourer is now offered with removed engine parts, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, owner’s manuals, invoices and correspondence dating back to the late 2000s, and transferable New York registration.
This example is finished in its factory shade of cream and is equipped with a black convertible top with matching side curtains. Features include rear-hinged low-cut doors, a louvered hood, bright front and rear bumpers, Lucas headlights with stone guards, fender-mounted side mirrors, and a black integrated trunk.
Green-painted wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and were wrapped with 5.50-18H Blockley tires and replacement tubes in 2024, as was a matching spare secured at the rear of the car. Stopping is handled by mechanically actuated drum brakes at each corner.
The right-hand-drive cabin houses front bucket seats and a divided rear bench trimmed in green pleated upholstery with color-matched sunbeam-patterned door panels. Pale green carpeting bound in green covers the floors and center tunnel and shows areas of wear and discoloration.
The four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a green dashboard fascia housing Smiths instrumentation including a 100-mph speedometer with markings indicating rpm in third and top gears, a clock, and gauges monitoring amperage, oil pressure, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 11k miles, approximately 50 of which have been added under current ownership.
The Standard L-head inline-six was overhauled in 2019 with a displacement increase to 2.3 liters in lieu of the original 2.1-liter 16hp configuration. Modifications included the addition of a crankshaft from a 3.5-liter Jaguar Mk V, oversized pistons, .020”-over main and rod bearings, a replacement cylinder head with a “20hp” casting mark, a dual-row timing chain, a high-volume oil pump, and an Aasco flywheel. Induction is through a single Stromberg downdraft carburetor that was installed in 2024, at which time fluid changes were performed, the fuel pump was rebuilt, and the windshield wiper motor was repaired.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with synchromesh on its top three gears. Suspension incorporates solid axles, semi-elliptical leaf springs, and friction shock absorbers, the latter of which were rebuilt in 2024.
A collection of removed parts includes a 16hp cylinder head, a crankshaft, and an intake manifold hosting twin SU carburetors.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace Certificate lists the original colors, component numbers, and pertinent dates. Scoring sheets from the 2024 JCNA Concours d’Elegance are viewable in the photo gallery below, and the car is also said to have won an award at the 2024 Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance.
The vehicle is being sold on its New York registration, which serves as the ownership document in New York. The car is registered using chassis number 247797, which is listed as the chassis number on the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate. The selling dealer is unable to locate the number on the car itself. Body number 4080 is shown stamped on a tag affixed to the firewall in the gallery, and is also listed on the heritage certificate.
