Rare beauty

Officially there are still 37 examples of the SS 100 with the 3.5 liter engine. And here we have one of them, the one with chassis number 39022. The car was not only a welcome guest at the Mille 1000, but was also thought to have been lost for many years. And this despite the fact that this Jag has also taken part in numerous classic car events and rallies over the past 36 years with its current owner. But if you want to transfer this car into your own possession, you don't have to worry about the fact that this is a garage queen with damage. In fact, this is one of those cars that has been driven often, with love, and above all, meticulously maintained. They were very well aware of the origin of the 38 and accordingly took responsible care of this almost sacred piece of automotive history.

The interior

What wonderful baroque fittings. It is a mixture between grandmother's grandfather clock and the curves of a sculpture. No compromises were made on this car when it was restored in the mid-1990s as far as originality was concerned. Seats, steering wheel, displays, indicator lights, decorative parts, carpets, the soft top, everything is as it was then and should be today. And by the way, you sit in this car pleasantly well for a vehicle concept that was created at the beginning of the last century far away from computers and ergonomic studies. You won't find any damage or defects.

Dynamics

125 horses from 3.5 liters and six cylinders. So much for the bare numbers. More important, however, is this absolutely unique driving experience with this car. The displacement is not only noticeable, but also audible. The sound of this six-cylinder is simply breathtakingly beautiful, inimitably sporty and absolutely honest. The propulsion is more than sufficient even by today's standards and you quickly get an impression of what it must have been like back then if you drove this car quickly over an Alpine pass. Mind you, on gravel and washed-out paths. Today, given its rarity, you would certainly not want to drive this car over the Gotthard at its limit, but you could if you wanted to. One must not forget that these cars are more than just solid despite their filigree shapes and this SS 100 also comes across as a castle at second glance at the technology. Solid steel wherever you look and plastics are non-existent anyway.

The steering can be described as tight and, if you want to call it that, the steering behavior is very direct and without a time lag. One is tempted to heave the car a little faster into a corner due to the virtually non-existent tendency to roll over, if it weren't for the very manageable tire dimensions. Of course, there are limits and it is good to slowly get to grips with the handling of the SS 100 and, above all, to get used to the operation of the transmission.

According to its original purpose, you can definitely move the SS 100 in a very sporty way, but its real parade discipline is the leisurely pace. Because there, too, the Jag not only gives its occupants a good feeling, but also those who perceive these shapes, which are absolutely unusual for today, and can hardly take their eyes off this fiery red roadster, at least until it has disappeared from view. The visual dynamics of this car are rightly so, absolutely legendary.

Condition

The rare 3.5 was completely rebuilt in Austria in the mid-1990s according to factory specifications in an absolutely first-class workshop for classic SS and Jaguars in Austria (Orlainsky, Bludenz). The color combination was reversed in favor of the sporty look, the car was factory black on the outside and red on the inside. Apart from that, the car corresponds to the configuration that was delivered to Spark Motors by Henlys in London on Saturday February 12th. This also applies to the combination of chassis, body and engine, the car is traceable matching #s (fresh Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate present).

The chrome parts are free of oxidation and damage. The paint has a healthy depth all around and will be restored to an absolutely perfect condition before handover. The interior is impeccable, no scratches, split seams or torn carpets. The electrics work perfectly. Even when cold, the engine starts within a few revolutions and quickly drops to a stable idle state. Performance is definitely there. The transmission shifts with absolute precision and with normal effort. The steering has no noticeable play around the center position.

A few small signs of wear and tear have accumulated on the car in recent years, these are of course completely removed by a specialized and highly renowned specialist company before it is handed over to a new owner.

Original and original

As already mentioned, apart from the reversed color combination, the car is as far as can be traced as it was when it was delivered from the factory. Of course, the small, oval blinds are also included with the car. The engine is in its original condition (revised) apart from a later fitted heat shield above the exhaust manifold and an oil pan on the underbody. The veteran entry was extended to 2026 in June 2020 with no objections.

According to our research, this SS 100 took part in the Mille Miglia in 1987 with starting number 89. And his driver was none other than Terry Cohn, famous collector and owner of the Fine Motor Company. Cohn was a regular participant in the famous rally in Italy and a highly valued expert when it came to the very fine vehicles of the pre-war period. Cars from his hand are still considered highlights at various auctions and events many years after his death.
