In Jan 2011 sold 2009
SS Jaguar 2.5 litre 3 position drophead coupe.

Chassis number 46179
Engine number 1241

This car is restored to as new, or even better then new condition.

According to the Jaguar Drivers Club on a recent enquiry, just five RHD examples are known to exist in the world.

A meticulous restoration and enhancement project has taken place over a 20 year period :-

Firstly the car was stripped to its bare chassis, and every mechanical, interior and body part removed. Everything was then totally restored and reassembled. The dashboard and all interior woodwork has been French polished. New leather lined carpets were fitted. Full Conolloly leather seats and side panels installed. In May 2009 the bodywork was stripped to bare metal and resprayed by top bodywork experts using the latest technology using the latest and most advanced full size spray oven where the total volume of air changes 6 times per minute. After the base coat was “air dried” a top coat of lacquer was applied and “baked off” this creates the protection that gives the SS paintwork resilience & clarity. - this work naturally carries a lifetime guarantee. In July 2009 a brand new West of England cloth lined black hood was fitted by professional trimming firm, again under full guarantee. A full photographic record of its restoration at each and every stage was kept.

I was first registered on 23rd November 1938.

It carries an MOT until May 4th 2010.

The present mileage is just 2100. All previous Mot's from past 14 years plus a comprehensive file of all receipts etc from dozens of highly specialized and highly skilled Uk experts go with the car. Only the leading specialists have ever been entrusted with the supply of all parts. A complete photographic record has been kept at each and every stage in the restoration. A full four page colour article in the Jaguar Monthly glossy magazine detailing the restoration goes with the record file.

Extras for this unique car include :

- Casimir Brau signed Art Deco original leaping Jaguar mascot in silver plated bronze. Signed C.Brau, with Deposé stamping.

Crosby had one of the original bronze castings of the Jaguar later mounted on his own SS saloon and this design was the master for the production version which exhibits a number of differences. There were believed to be six of these castings and only one is still known to exist. This sole surviving example is currently housed in Ian Cooling’s collection. Ian Cooling has recently bought to light the fact that Michael Gordon Crosby, his son, remembers that his father originally had a Casimir Brau Panther mascot fitted to his early SS car and doubtless this mascot inspired him to design his own version of the leaping Jaguar in 1937.

It is surely fitting that this car carries a fabulous original Casimir Brau Art Deco late 1925 silver plated bronze leaping 'Panthere'. IOt is the finest example I have enclountered in forty years. Surely the most fitting of all car mascots ever designed to compliment the flowing lines of the SS Jaguar DHC.

- Lucas P100DB Bulls eye headlamps with figure eight pattern glasses and vertical fluting.

- Lucas PLG40 tri-bar spot lamps with tri-bars, the lenses with vertical fluting.

- Lucas New Alto horns with optional mesh fronts.

- Hand pillar spot lamps with rear mirrors by Raydot.

- Five period rarest badges, National Motorists Association, British Racing Drivers Club, BARC, Aero Club and SS car club.

- Matching hood bag in finest Conolly hides matching the red leather seats.

- SS original tax disc holder.

- Complete set of original tools fitted in the original tool tray all totally restored.

- Set of brand new chrome plated stainless steel wire wheels and Dunlop Gold Seal tyres, fitted in August 2009.

The car is sold with an original copy of the Autocar December 1937 with details on the improved boot layout and the very apt description of Jaguar Cars on the front cover describing them as 'The outstanding car of this generation '

Hi, a bit odd comment from auctioneers and JDC. "According to the Jaguar Drivers Club on a recent enquiry, just five RHD examples are known to exist in the world. "

ALL pre-WW2 Jaguars and SS's were/are RHD, unless someone has modified them seriously. The factory did not make any LHD cars prior to 1946.

Impressive Jaguar SS in perfect condition!

Right-hand drive.

Belgian papers.

Very extensive historical file.

Restoration photos.

Buff log book and manual.

The '100' was for the theoretical 100 mph maximum speed of the vehicle. See the XK 120 (120 mphj), XK 140 (140 mph) and XK 150 (150 mph).   In mid 1936 the first version of the Jaguar mascot was reputedly described by Sir William Lyons, founder of the company, as "looking like a cat shot off a fence". A later publicity photograph of the new Model 100 "Jaguar" (registration mark CKV 250) parked outside the offices of SS Cars Ltd in early 1937 shows a revised Jaguar 'leaper' mounted on the radiator cap. It is this more stylised 'leaper' that became the trade mark for Jaguar Cars, Ltd., remaining in use to this day.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
