Car was at auction 2/12
www.historics.co.uk/previous-auctions/18th-february-2012/jaguar.aspx

Auction description:
Lot 266 - 1937 Jaguar SS 1½ litre Saloon
Registration: EVW201
Chassis Number: 20916
Engine Number: 58811
Odometer reading: 80,100
Estimate: £28,000-£34,000
Hammer: Sold
Plus Commission: £31,075

This most elegant Jaguar SS 1½ litre saloon has been owned by the current vendor for the last 26 years and was originally built in November 1936 and supplied to Henlys, the largest dealer group within the UK at the time. EVW201 has benefitted from substantial investment by the vendor over a long period of time; during the 1990s, the brake system was completely overhauled together with new king pins and new wiring fitted. In June 2007, the engine was totally rebuilt by Cedar Classic & Vintage Cars of Hook in Hampshire with invoices totalling £7,600. The vendor advises us that the vehicle has covered approximately 200 miles since. A reconditioned steering box was fitted in May 2009 at a cost of £1,040, the differential has been refurbished and wire wheels rebuilt with new tyres fitted. On the cosmetic side of things, the brightwork has been re-plated and coachwork repainted while the leather seats have also been sympathetically restored. The conclusion of this investment is a Jaguar SS 1½ litre model that, whilst not concours, is a very presentable and useable pre-war classic. Supplied with a V5 registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until 18th August 2012, together with a comprehensive file of invoices collected during the vendor's ownership, this is an opportunity to purchase a most elegant touring saloon.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
