Underwent restoration in about 1980. The exterior is green, not quite NRG, with black wings. Interior is black. The engine has been rebuilt and stroked. Currently sorting out the mechanical brakes.

This 1937 SS Jaguar 1½ Litre saloon is said to be one of approximately 1,500 examples built for the model year and was imported to the US from the UK in 1974. It was reportedly refurbished in 1981 and was subsequently donated to the Towe Automobile Museum in Sacramento, California. The current owner acquired it from the museum in 2004 and commissioned an additional mechanical refurbishment that was completed in 2010. The car is finished in green with black fenders over black leather upholstery, and power comes from a rebuilt, numbers-matching 1,608cc inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Features include a side-mounted spare wheel, trafficators, and a sliding sunroof. Modifications consist of a negative ground electrical system, an electric cooling fan, an Airtex electric fuel pump, Chevrolet engine bearings, and an MGB-sourced clutch assembly. This SS Jaguar is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with tools, spare parts, a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, and a clean California title listing it as a 1936 Jaguar.
The body-color 18″ wire wheels feature chrome two-eared SS knock-offs and are fitted with Excelsior bias-ply tires. A matching spare wheel is mounted in a black case with an ACE wheel disc on the left fender. The chassis was supplied by the Standard Motor Company and features an underslung rear axle as well as Luvax dampers that were reportedly rebuilt in the 2000s. The mechanically operated drum brake shoes were relined in the 2000s, the drums were turned, and the brake rod ends were refreshed with bronze bushings and new pins.
Delivered from the factory with blue upholstery, the right-hand-drive cabin now features low back bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in black leather with matching door panels and carpets, while wood trims the dashboard, doors, and rear panels. Features include rear reading lamps, four ashtrays, and a venting single-piece windshield.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts a central panel with SS-branded Smiths instrumentation including a 100-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 4,500-rpm redline and an inset clock, and auxiliary gauges. The electrical system was converted to negative ground under previous ownership causing the ammeter to read backward. The five-digit odometer shows under 50k miles, 1k of which was added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The Standard-sourced 1,608cc inline-four features a Solex carburetor and was rated at approximately 12 taxable horsepower by the British government. The engine was reportedly rebuilt by Doug and Ed Nantes of New South Wales, Australia, in 2006, at which time it was fitted with skirted JP pistons and connecting rods, line-bored Chevrolet bearings, an oil filter housing for Mercedes-Benz filters, and new gaskets. The distributor is said to have been rebuilt by Advanced Distributors of Shakopee, Minnesota, and the radiator was serviced and fitted with a Kenlowe electric fan. Engine stamping 59401 matches the chassis tag in the gallery and the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate. A “STANDARD 12” block casting can also be seen.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with a non-synchronized first gear and an MGB-sourced clutch assembly. The transmission seals are said to have been replaced in the 2000s, along with Kwik Sleeve axle sleeves and new axle bearings. An Airtex 323 electric fuel pump and regulator were adjusted for the Solex carburetor and were also installed during the refurbishment.
The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate shows a dispatch date in November 1936 and shows initial distribution via Henlys Limited in Manchester, UK. Factory colors are listed along with engine, body, and chassis numbers.
